The AGDS was founded in 1956 as an umbrella organisation of schools where German is taught as a mother tongue and has, true to its objectives, worked for the preservation and promotion of the German language in Namibia over the past decades.

TIMELINE OF THE AGDS

21 October 1956

Founding of "Arbeitsgemeinschaft der deutschen Schulvereine von Südwestafrika".

1976

Foundation of "Fördergesellschaft der Deutschen Schulvereine in Südwestafrika".

1980

The AGDS "Lehrertagung" project is created and renamed the "Dieter-Esslinger-Lehrertagung" in 2018 and the "Dieter-Esslinger-Pädagogiktagung" in 2024.

1986

Closure of the Privat Schule Karibib and foundation of the PSK Verein.

24 March 1987

The AGDS project "Horst-Kreft-Lesefest" is established.

1988

The AGDS scholarship programme is launched. Since then, 56 student teachers have been awarded a scholarship (as of 2023).

19 August 1988

The AGDS project "Kurt-Böhme-Rednerwettbewerb" is established.

20 May 1989

Foundation of the Deutscher Kulturrat DKR.

1990

Merger of FADS AGDS to form the "Arbeits- und Fördergemeinschaft der Deutschen Schulvereine in Namibia" AGDS.

1995

The DKR project "Kulturfest" is created and will be taken over by the AGDS in 2023.

2000

Transfer of the PSK fund to the AGDS and foundation of "Projekt Lilie".

2005

First Projekt Lilie Gala Evening.

2012

The DKR project "Aufsatzwettbewerb" is being created, but has not been held since 2019

June 2022

Dissolution of the DKR and takeover of the projects "Kulturfest" and "Aufsatzwettbewerb" by the AGDS.

November 2022

Future strategy and reorganisation of the AGDS through close cooperation with the member associations.

January 2023

The AGDS project "Deutsch für den Schulstart" is being developed in cooperation with the University of Heidelberg.

20 October 2023

"Kindergarten Network" (created in 2020) and AGDS seals close cooperation.

20 October 2023

The AGDS officially goes online and is now present on Facebook, Instagram and the Internet.

November 2023

Final decision to reorganise the "Kurt-Böhme-Rednerwettbewerb" into a new „natürlich Deutsch“ project for highschool students.
